Immigration and naturalization: Things to know about citizenship

Posted by Saul Steinberg | Apr 22, 2019 | 0 Comments

In New Jersey and elsewhere, there are many immigrants whose ultimate goals include becoming citizens of the United States. Pursuing citizenship can be a lengthy and stressful process. However, the more one learns about the system ahead of time, the easier it might be to navigate.

Before a person can become a citizen, he or she must meet eligibility requirements. If eligible, a process unfolds that includes filling out various forms, getting fingerprinted and attending an official interview. An immigrant seeking citizenship must also take a test.

The purpose of the test is to show mastery of certain skills, such as the ability to read, write and speak English. It is also important to have a basic understanding of how the U.S. government functions, as well as knowledge of important historical dates and events. It can be quite helpful to talk to someone who has already accomplished similar goals so that he or she can give some pointers about what to study, as well as what types of obstacles may arise. Working directly with attorneys who are well-versed in U.S. immigration law is often the swiftest means for overcoming such problems.

A request for naturalization will either be granted, continued or denied. If the U.S. government grants a New Jersey resident citizenship, he or she will be invited to attend a ceremony and will be asked to take an oath of allegiance to the United States. Zucker Steinberg & Wixted is committed to providing support in all aspects of the naturalization process, as well as other immigrant-related issues.
