Family law concerns when divorcing a narcissist

It is definitely not easy to be married to a narcissist. It's no easy feat to maintain a lifelong relationship with someone who is completely focused on self. In fact, most narcissists are not even aware of their own conditions, which can make matters worse because it is difficult to bring problems to their attention, as they will often act like they have no idea what their spouses, friends or family members are talking about. This is why many narcissistic marriages in New Jersey and elsewhere end in family law court.

Not every marriage that includes a narcissistic spouse ends in divorce. However, it is understandable that some people simply find it impossible to sustain a relationship that is totally one-sided. A narcissist views the world and relationships according to how a particular person or situation serves his or her needs or meets his or her standards, or doesn't.

A person trying to survive a narcissistic marriage can be proactive toward his or her own well-being. It is a good idea to set boundaries and to let the individual know it is unacceptable (and will not be tolerated) to treat his or her partner in a degrading or emotionally abusive manner. Many spouses get into the habit of covering for their loved ones' rude behavior. Setting boundaries often means no more making excuses for a spouse's inappropriate words or deeds.

An experienced family law attorney can help a concerned New Jersey spouse explore his or her options in these circumstances. A narcissist rarely accepts blame for relationship problems, so things could get messy in court. A New Jersey judge can make sure that a settlement is fair and just. Any court order handed down is also legally enforceable, and if a spouse disregards an order, a judge may hold him or her in contempt.
