Immigration and naturalization: Benefits for green card holders

When you entered the United States with hopes and goals of building a new life in New Jersey, you may have been both excited and worried. The immigration and naturalization processes can be quite stressful, especially if you have a significant language barrier or have encountered challenges regarding your legal status. Applying for a green card is often a step toward permanent residency or becoming a U.S. citizen.

As with most immigration programs, you must fulfill eligibility requirements before applying for a green card. Once a green card holder, it might feel like a whole new world has opened up. One of the greatest benefits of being a green card holder is that it's a step in the right direction for applying for becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen.

By possessing a green card, a holder might be able to sponsor someone else who also wishes to come to the United States to live, work or apply for citizenship. College students who are green card holders often pay less tuition. This is because, in certain circumstances, a green card holder can claim "in state" residency status when attending a college or university.

Renewal of a green card only needs done every 10 years. This is a lot less stressful than many other immigration and naturalization processes. International travel to and from New Jersey or other states is much easier for immigrants who possess green cards. An experienced U.S. immigration law attorney can provide guidance and support if an obstacle arises during or after the green card application process.
