Man charged with assaulting postal worker on Christmas Eve

The holidays can have a funny way of bringing out surprising sides of people, and New Jersey is certainly no stranger to surprising behavior. A Newark man is now facing serious charges after the U.S. Postal Service filed claims against him, alleging that he attacked a clerk after they had a disagreement on Christmas Eve.

The man in question claimed that he confronted the woman after his wife had gone to the post office looking for packages that had not been delivered, even resorting to calling 911 to report that the clerk had been tampering with her mail. The couple waited for the branch to close and then approached the clerk outside the post office.

According to the complaint, the man assaulted the clerk by punching her in the face, and also threatened her by implying that he was carrying a firearm. He also allegedly warned her that “his boys were watching” her, and that she should not call the police about the incident.

While elements of the case may seem amusing to those removed from the experience, both the victim and the alleged assailant are experiencing very real consequences of from the interaction. The man who stands accused of the assault is a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago, which could mean deportation and separation from his family if he is convicted of the charges, which are federal charges because the altercation involved a federal employee.

All of us are capable of having a moment of poor judgement, and no one should have their entire lives uprooted and overturned for a simple mistake or conflict that got out of hand. If you have been charged with a crime, it is always wise to acquire the best defense that you can find. With proper representation by a qualified and experienced attorney, you can be assured that your case will be heard fairly and that your rights will remain protected.
